JB,

I don't understand your point.

Jailbreaking the iPhone does not require command line or knowledge of Unix.

I just don't understand why people want to intentionally make their iPhone unstable. As majority of the "unauthorized applications" are usually hacks to the iPhone firmware resulting in an unstable iPhone.

Re: iPhone Firmware 3.1 Beta

>> I personally do not know of any significant reasons for jailbreaking the iPhone

Haha. Especially with so many applications upgrading to include Push notifications. Smartone-Vodafone will definitely not consider Push traffic as "Internet Browsing".

BTW: I have now confirmed that my "3G IOM Value Pack" is no longer available as a "no contract" plan.

I personally will NOT be choosing the "Duo Boardband" plan, since its per MB charge is the same as my current plan. Even if I go over HKD45.00 for a given month, I have the benefit of falling back down to HKD0.00 for the month, if I don't use any data traffic outside of "Internet Browsing"; which is unlikely. Plus I do not have to sign a 15 month contract.

What plan do you have that Smartone-Vodafone is willing to offer you HKD60.00 off per month?

Aside from the discount, I think the 15-month contract "IOM Value Pack" at either HKD96.00 or HKD116.00 is still the best option for iPhone user.

Re: To iPhone 3G S or Not?

Hi Craig,

You're welcome. My brother living with me has an official 3HK iphone, and I was actually sharing experience from his phone.

Right now what is even more tempting about going with the Duo Broadband Plan, is that they are offering me $60 monthly discount on my voice plan, which I can put together with the duo broadband plan. Together this comes to around HKD130 / month with 50MB to use, and capped at around HKD430 for unlimited use.

Another reason I'm considering the switch, is because I've lately been using more and more 'extra data' from my 'internet browsing plans'. I get phonecalls from smartone suggesting me to upgrade my data plans monthly, and it's starting to get tiresome. I agree too that HTTP traffic is considered browsing in this case, but with all the new apps coming up with 3.0 it's becoming hard to stick to this restriction.

I will probably signup for the Duo Broadband this week as my billing cycle is approaching. Will let you know my experience.

Re: MMS With iPhone 3.0 On iPhone 3G

Update on MMS on CSL. With the above settings I am able to receive MMS messages from people using other carriers but not able to send them.. so the mystery continues. So how come you're referring to your 3 HK iPhone 3G in another comment on my post?

What a coincident, I was thinking about a new combination of Smartone-Vodafone plan(s) also. As my current, non-contract, "3G IOM Value Plan (III)" plan (HKD136/month) will not be feasible if I ever use tethering with my iPhone 3G.

The "Duo Broadband Plan" is also what I'm thinking of. This plan is good for both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S running firmware 3.0. Of course the iPhone 3G S will also have the option to choose the HKD80/month plan, with 21Mbps down / 5.76Mbps up bandwidth, but the iPhone 3G S is only capable of supporting 7.2Mbps HSDPA connection.

The '3G IOM Value Plan" I am on includes 600MB/month; at 20MB/day limit, of what Smartone-Vodafone considered "Internet Browsing". As I had mentioned in past posts, I had never been able to receive a definite answer as to how they determine "Internet Browsing" traffic.

From my test this past 2 years, it appears that any HTTP traffic is considered "Internet Browsing". Although, Smartone-Vodafone sales and Customer Service representatives will tell you definitely. Their company line is to say "Internet Browsing is any traffic through the phone's native browser."

My test found that several other iPhone applications' traffic are also considered HTTP (ie. Weather, Stock).

I use my iPhone without worrying about the cost of my data traffic, and this normally result in HKD30.00 extra charge for my monthly bill. This is for the HKD15/15MB that they charge for other data traffic aside from Internet Browsing.

I currently do not ever reach the maximum allotment of 600MB/month for Internet Browsing, and the 30MB are usually RSS, IMAP and other Data traffic. The latter I presume are from the Twitter client I use.

BTW: I hate contracts and try my best not to sign any. Having said that I will be discussing my options with Smartone-Vodafone this weekend.

No matter what, you need to make sure you comply with Smartone-Vodafone's Fair Use policies

Re: To iPhone 3G S or Not?

Hi Andreas,

Yes, tethering does work on the iPhone 3G running the iPhone firmware 3.0, but it depends on whether the carrier will allow it.

For the case of Hong Kong users, we are fortunately that all HK carriers allow tethering (at a cost). You can see my other post regarding enabling/setting up tethering on your iPhone.

Re: Tethering iPhone 3.0

Hi Vinko,
I emailed you around a year ago when I first got my iphone 3G to discuss the smartone-vodafone 'unlimited internet' plans.

My contract has just ended with smartone, and I'm considering their $50/month 'duo broadband' plan so I can use tethering on my iphone 3G 3.0.

Have you had any experience with this? which plan are you using? would you recommend joining this 15month contract?

Thanks
Andreas

Re: To iPhone 3G S or Not?

I think tethering works on iphone 3G as well, I haven't tried it, but my 16G iphone 3G from 3HK has that option in settings.

Re: MMS With iPhone 3.0 On iPhone 3G

Settings for CTM in Macau for not prepaid SIM cards

APN = ctmmms
MMSC = http://mms.wap.ctm.net:8002
MMS Proxy = 192.168.99.3:8080
MMS Max Message Size = 307200 (be sure to enter this value, otherwise it will not work)

Re: Review: TweetDeck for iPhone

Very good review. I have an legally unlocked TREO 680 using the Palm OS Garnet v 5.4.9 and can use MMS with my CSL SIM card. The settings are for the GPRS mode (3G not available) and it states IP address automatic as well as Query DNS has been checked. APN is hkcsl with no user name or password.
